Despite its size, it's a comfortable and useful watchMar 16, 2009

PROS: 1) comfortable watch to wear: as other reviewers point out, it feels well balanced despite it's physical size.
2) Fits well, even for smaller wrist sizes: the material, shape of the band and its width all work to make this a comfortable watch.
3) Titanium backing (lightweight and resists corrosion).
4) The tide and moon functions seem to be fairly accurate and are fun/useful to have readily available.
5) Really, it's not that bulky when compared to many other watches. For example it's comparable to a self winding analog watch.
CONS: 1) It's bulk is felt if you wear it with tight fitting sleaves (such as knitted wrists on a jacket).
2) The booklet that comes with it is a little tedius to use (small pages and print), which may be why some people found it difficult to set up. However, you can easily find a .pdf file on the Internet that is full size and easier to read.
In general, the Moon Phase and Tide functions require you to invest a little more time in learning to use the watch - but that ought to be expected. In the end, you may even enjoy learning some of the science behind it.

A good choiceJul 02, 2009
By G. Webster I am a G-Shock fan, and I really find myself wanting to LOVE this watch. I think it sells itself on a "concept" more than any actual, useful features - but that's fine as long as you're aware of what you're buying.
Typical of all G-Shocks, it is incredibly durable and feels rock solid. The buttons on this Gulfman are actually larger and more easy to press than many other G-Shocks, and that's a big plus. Let me try to break it down:
Pros: - Sharp-looking display, slightly cluttered, but looks impressive. - Titanium backplate and screws (essentially makes this watch rust-proof). - Moon and Tide displays actually work with reasonable accuracy - after you have spent an hour on the 'net working out how to set them for your location :) - Backlight ("dual illuminator") looks fantastic (after you see it yourself, you will understand).
Cons: - Moon phase display is TOO SMALL. I can see it, but, it needs to be slightly larger. - No dedicated Light button at the bottom of the face. Most G-Shocks have this button. It is sorely missed on this watch (instead you use the top-right button for the light)
This watch also shows a cool little animation as you switch between the various modes; for those interested, the modes are: TIME -> TIDE/MOON -> WORLD TIME -> STOPWATCH -> COUNTDOWN TIMER -> ALARMS. You have 2 alarms plus a third snooze alarm. As with many G-Shocks, you can set the display to flash with the alarm/hourly chime/countdown timer - completely pointless but incredibly cool at the same time :)
The tide graph has been working well for me, after I finally managed to set the correct values within the watch. No big deal if you are prepared to spend a bit of time searching on the internet. However, the graph is limited by it's own "resolution"; by that I mean the way the bar-graph is set up with only 6 segments, it will only flick to the next segment every 2 hours, so you are never really going to be sure exactly when high tide is for a particular day (as well as showing the current tide in timekeeping mode, this watch allows you to easily step through the hours of the day and see where the tide will be at that time). Similarly, it allows you to easily step through the days of the month and see what the moon will look like on that date. Anybody who depends on the tides/moon with any regularity will already have charts that show this information more clearly - but it fits well with the theme of this watch and it is a welcome feature.
... Is titanium really necessary on a G-Shock? Probably not, but as I said at the start, this watch is selling the "idea" that it was made for the ocean and anybody who interacts with the ocean. And in many respects it fits very well.
In summary, if you are the type of person who is interested in tides/moon, and who spends time near the ocean, this may well be a very enjoyable watch for you to own. It has great "wrist presence" with it's chunky plastic bezel, it weighs practically nothing thanks to the lack of steel, and it feels kind of cool just jumping into the ocean with a titanium-backed monster called a "Gulfman" strapped onto your wrist :)
On the other hand, if you are just looking for a general-wear G-Shock, you may want to check out other models such as the Mudman range (Casio Men's G-Shock Mudman Solar Atomic Watch #GW9000A-1), or my favourite, the DW-5600e (Casio Men's G-Shock Classic Digital Watch #DW5600E-1V).

Old Gulfman better than new?Mar 08, 2009
By Mitchell Billings When I received my Gulfman, I immediately went to a tide chart and set up the watch for the tides. Worked well! The only problem was that the chart was so tiny that these older eyes couldn't read it without some help. Probably better for the younger set. The NEW model of the Gulfman...atomic and such, do NOT do the tides and moon. What a pity....that makes THIS model more useful (and cheaper) than the new one. I like the looks of this one...my first G-Shock. However, now having had this one (and given it away to a friend, who loves it...HIS first G-shock) I'm convinced that you should save your money and get the RISEMAN which tells temperature, barometer, altitude...all in a nice package. BUT....the Gulfman I consider a BEST BUY! Best bangs for the buck...should be able to get this for about $60.

With the Auto Light Switch I just angle the watch toward my face to see the time! Really cool!Dec 04, 2010

I bought the Gulfman for the 'Tide and Moon Phase' features. On the downside, the graph is tiny. In natural lighting however, it is easy to read. I don't have any problems since I mostly view the 'tide and moon phase' graph outdoors.
This G-Shock has a list of gadgets that would make even MacGyver happy! I must admit, I'll hardly ever use most of them.
The coolest feature of this Casio G-Shock Gulfman is the 'Auto Light Switch'. When this feature is turned on, the entire watch face illuminates automatically when you angle the watch towards your face. You can even adjust how long you want the light to stay on! This feature can be easily activated (and deactivated) by simply pressing the top right switch!
Finally! A watch that can display the time without the user fumbling to press a switch in the dark!

Another great feature of this G-Shock Gulfman is the lightweight, rust resistant, titanium casing. This watch is built tough just like the earlier G-Shock models. Being lighter, it is more comfortable than the older G-Shocks with heavier stainless steel casings.
In addition to surf fishing, I wear the Casio G-Shock Gulfman while operating power tools. As expected for the G-Shock series, the watch's black resin bezel has so far handled the vibration of standard power drills and, even a 20-Inch Chain Saw!
Instead of changing the battery on my old G-Shock, I made a great decision to purchase the Casio G-Shock Gulfman.
I may not need to see the time in 29 time zones or use all three multi-function alarms, but I sure love the Auto Light Switch on this Casio Men's G9100-1 G-Shock Gulfman Tide and Moon Watch! :)
HELPFUL HINT: If you have problems reading the tiny print in the Casio G-Shock User's Manual, then a simple Google search for 'Casio Watch User Manuals' would give you the website to access to the G-Shock Gulfman User's Manual in PDF format. (I saved my Casio User's Manual on my Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device).

gulfman tideJul 06, 2008

i love this watch because it has a nice big face and tells the tide height. I bought it so when i go on a cruise and stop at an island i will know how high or low the tides are. the watch look tougher and stronger than it looks online. Everyone who sees it likes too. this watch is tough, rough and unique. I collect g-shocks and happy that i added this one to my collection.
