Complicated, NO blue backlight (Illuminator)Jun 14, 2008
By whatithink I was just looking for a simple sports watch with both a stopwatch and countdown timer, but this had a lot more than I expected (or needed). It has some timer features particularly for referees, which you may or may not find a use for. While all the features are easy enough to learn, having six modes means a lot of button presses (up to 6) to get back to the main mode. Fortunately, the main mode has a different beep sound, so you can keep pressing it quickly without looking until you hear it. It does what I need though with some complexity. Perhaps I will come to use the other features as well.
Looks: Nice; a bit thick for my taste (about 1/2"; spec says .58"), but it seems a lot of men's sports watches are like that these days - The main picture shown above is misleading - there is NO blue backlight, but a cheapish orange LED that emits from left side over a dull gray background. The word "Illuminator" inscribed at the top of the watch is also misleading. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that supposed to be Casio's blue backlight technology? Maybe this watch used to have it, but not now. The LED works fine but does not look as nice - Lens is not recessed so it is easy to scratch
Battery: 10-yr spec assumes use of any feature only once/week (a joke?)
Manual: Hard to read as it is very small and thick - Get the free 3-page PDF manual which has all the info but is much easier to read, at the watch manual section of the casio site (enter 3100 for Module No.)
Stopwatch: I did not like it; it seems specialized for things like soccer - Two counts displayed - The Main count shows 100ths of sec but cannot be stopped at all (kind of useless). It can be set to beep after a specified elapsed time (like end of soccer regulation) - The small count in corner (harder to read) acts like a standard stopwatch. No splits; just start, stop. It does not show 100ths of sec. In soccer, can use to count stoppage time
Preset countdown timer: Can choose from these times(min): 10,12,20,15,20,25,30,35,40,45 - Auto-repeat feature: If enabled, counts the number repeats (up to 99). If disabled, it just counts up after it hits zero and sounds the alarm, like most countdown timers do - I like that the current time is in the corner so I don't have to switch modes to find out
Interval Countdown timer: You can use this as a regular countdown timer settable from 1 to 59 min, though I wish it could be set higher. There are also 8 additional timers which you can set individually. The watch will detect which timers are set and run them sequentially. You could use this for interval training or game timing. Auto-repeat can be set for the whole sequence.
World Clock: You can have this display the time in practically any other time zone. 3-letter codes for cities, and DST can be set separately for each
Alarm: Standard features, hourly chime
Other: Button beeps can be turned off
Overall: A decent watch, especially for the price. It's growing on me, I think.

Great Referee Watch!Sep 16, 2008
By Lynn J. Strub I work as a football referee for youth through high school, and this watch has served me great when we need to keep time on the field. It has a set of pre-programmed count down timers that work great for field timing. Or, it has a feature where you can program in a custom time interval. So in the case of games, you can set up a time interval for each quarter, half-time, etc. Or, if your using it for a work out, you can program the intervals for wind sprints, 1 minute sprint, 30 second walk, etc.
One of the complaints I noticed in the other posts was with regard to the backlight. It's true it's not the indeglow (sp?) backlighting, it's just two LEDs on the right half of the face, however I have found it still easy to read using the backlight in a low light environment.
I would say this is an excellent buy for the money, and would highly recommend it to a referee or as a general workout timing watch.

Great for interval training/crossfit type workoutsApr 25, 2012
By Edward V. Hawk I bought this watch primarily because I was using my phone as an interval timer, but it was a pain to have it in view constantly, and the app crashed occasionally (which really screws up a crossfit type workout when you have to stop, start the app again, and then get back to it).
For that, it works great - I have it set for 60 > 20 > repeat - so I do my exercise for 60 seconds, max effort, rest for 20, 60, 20 - until I'm done. The interface is a little confusing at first, but they only have so many buttons to work with. For the price, I couldn't find anything better.
Other thoughts: I looked for a programmable watch that actually had two sets of intervals, that you could "link" - I do 10 exercises, and have a 120 second break, so ideally, the 60/20 would repeat 10 times, queue the 120 minute timer, you'd be able to set that combo to loop for 4 times (which is pretty much my workout). Not a huge deal, and I couldn't find anything that did that - if this just had a couple of more slots for intervals, I'd just be able to loop it (it would need 11), but it's not a big deal. I just stop it at 10 repeats, reset, wait 2 minutes, and start again.
Helps my workouts mainly on focus; I don't have to mess with a phone or an app, it's just a solid state device on my wrist that tells me when I'm done.

My favorite watch & it's under $20Mar 10, 2011

"Copernicus"
This is the only watch I wear. Why? Because it has the functionality I need. I am a heavy computer user & suffer from severe eye strain. I bought this watch because of the 'timer' functionality.
You can choose a number of preset timers & it will actually continuously loop if you want. I have it preset to 25 minutes so that an alarm sounds every 25 minutes which reminds me to stand-up, relax my eyes & refocus.
Additionally, the watch has an alarm, stopwatch, a setting for interval training & a world clock. For $20, you can't go wrong.

A watch that does it's job.Feb 20, 2011
By Mr. O I am an 80 yr old male. I bought this watch to replace a Timex that was so scratched I could barely see the time. The buttons were so bad that I Had to use a tool to hold them in in order to change the time. This NEW Casio is easy to change and has all of the features that I need. The only con would be it's size. It is rather large and thick but I have adapted to it quickly. Buying through Amazon was a breeze as usual.
