Excellent Quality & Value w/Co-axial Escapement TechnologyNov 16, 2011
By D. Richmond Part I - November 15, 2011 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I just received the watch (delivered in one day international shipping! - Amazon was the vendor), I'll just post mostly the why's of purchasing decision and general impression of quality. Accuracy will be monitored and the review updated after a suitable duration has elapsed.
Wow! I've had it for about 8 hours now and it's keeping amazing time! ;)
But really, I was going to buy a Rolex Submariner 116610LN but then I read something about the Omega Co-Axial Escapement. The technology was developed originally by George Daniels in the 1970's. By the late 80's the design was being offered to various brands (Rolex & Omega) for possible production. The co-axial escapement apparently reduces friction by 93% over the lever escapement. Anyways, you can google this up but here's an interesting link if Amazon doesn't remove it: [...]
What I wanted in a watch: Accuracy Quality Luxury Durability (sapphire crystal) Diver Automatic/mechanical with decent reserve Value
I considered the Seiko MarineMaster Prospex 600M Diver Spring Drive SBDB001 as well as the Rolex Sub as I mentioned. The more I read about the Omega co-axial escapement the more it appealed. Co-ax has been in production with Omega for about 12 years now, the technology about 40 years from conception.
Omega's quality is excellent. Bezel, clasp, links, dial, all are as you would expect for the price. The second hand sweeps very smooth, about 5 ticks to each second. The clasp has the push buttons safety. I'm maybe slightly larger than average (6', 190lb) and will only need maybe one link removed. If you have large wrists you may want to inquire about an addional link or two.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Features
Date The day of the month, displayed in a window on a watch dial typically at the 3 o'clock or 6 o'clock position.
Chronometer Label given to a watch which has undergone precision tests and received a certificate from an official body (COSC).
Helium escape valve Decompression system which allows helium to escape from inside the watch when the watch is worn for professional use in pressure chambers. (Long-term underwater work, crude oil exploration, etc.)
Screw-in crown Self-locking crown, screwed into the tube of the case, used for highly water resistant divers' watches.
Unidirectional rotating bezel A bezel which turns in only one direction. Particularly useful for divers who cannot accidentally rotate it in the wrong direction, which could cause them to miscalculate their dive times. A rotating bezel makes it easy to measure elapsed time.
